Jordan Peeles Us Is a Bloodcurdling Horror Story About Evil Clones: See the Trailer

The wait is over. A new trailer for Jordan Peeles sophomore feature, Us, has arrived, revealing that the director has traded social thrillers in for classic, bloody horror.

The film stars Lupita Nyongo and Winston Duke as a couple going on a vacation with their two children. The trailer opens similarly to Get Out, with the family joyously driving as Dukes character sings along to Lunizs “I Got Five on It” (which gets a creepy remix once the trailer takes a dark turn). Once they arrive at their destination, they hang out with another couple, played by Tim Heidecker and Elisabeth Moss—as the kind of woman who quips, “Its vodka oclock.”

While on the beach, their son runs off—and, because this is a horror movie, he sees a dark omen: a bloodied man (or a demon in human form?) with his arms oddly outstretched. And thats when the trouble begins. Later, the son sees mysterious figures in the driveway. Dukes character goes outside, bat in hand, to ward them off—and thats when he realizes that theyre twisted, clone versions of his partner and kids, except wearing orange jumpsuits and full of bloodlust. Soon enough, the family is in for the fight for their lives.

Clever horror fans will no doubt catch glimpses of several Easter eggs and references in the trailer, from a Funny Games nod to the return of the horror bunny trope. The golden scissors from the films poster also feature in the trailer, with Mosss character at one point holding them up to one of her ears.

At a trailer presentation on December 18, Peele spoke a bit about the process of creating the film and the story, saying he was largely focused on coming up with a new kind of monster. The plot of Us, he noted, hinges on one firm belief: “We are our own worst enemies.” He added that the film is “not about race,” heading off any social debates (or, gulp, think pieces) that might be stirred upon release. Us hits theaters on March 15.
