What could have been?

Kanye West released his latest album Ye on Friday (1 June), with the long-awaited record seeing the rapper address such topics as his mental health, his family and – of course – that TMZ interview.

The lead-up to Ye was fraught with many, many talking points – but none were quite as monumental as the epic dressing-down Kanye received from a TMZ employee after he suggested in an interview that slavery was a choice.

The fall-out from those controversial comments of course made its way onto Ye, with the rapper recalling on the track Wouldnt Leave his wife Kim Kardashians panicked response to the furore that welcomed his choice of words.

At Thursday nights listening party in Wyoming, Kanye revealed to Big Boy TV that the reaction to his TMZ comments was so severe that he completely re-did the album.

We just sat there and really honed in on the words because now its all headlines, its like every bar can be used, theres even bars we had about that, he explained.

I took a bar off the album. It was just too sensitive, it was about that topic. And I just let go, [being like]: “Im gonna just chill right now, lets just keep making some music.”

You know, I feel like, as a son, and as a family member of the world… thats the reason why the world wont let me go, because Im just a family member, he continued.

They might disagree with me, but Im family.

Ive been here for 15 years, 18 years, and you know, I feel like the best thing I could do is sit there, and go in that studio, and keep chopping that thing that only I know how to do, and only me and my crew know how to do.
