Its her golden year and the golden era for Kylie Minogues music.
As cheesy as that might sound, its actually true – this year marks Kylies 50th and she hasnt let it just pass it simply pass her by. Shes gone big, and is not ready to go home. Kylie released her countrified album Golden in April, and followed that with a huge arena tour that saw her take over Londons O2 for three nights. From the outset it was pretty clear her gigs were a massive thank you to the room full of fans who have followed her career for 30 years as she opened with Golden and quickly moved into Better The Devil You Know, then razzle dazzled us for the next two hours.
The setlist was a gentle blend of old as she acknowledged both her old school Kylie fans who only know the golden oldies, as well as her die-hard ones whove been there throughout. The audience became very much part of the gig – she was there for a big old duet, not some solo performance.
The visuals were striking; dramatic black and white for Confide In Me with Kylie as a lounge singer, dancing on a pool table in a dive bar for I Believe In You, and a hoe down for Stop Me From Falling. The themes changed from cowboys to Hells Angels to Studio 54 as the singer transitioned through her musical career, although with such a swift pace the stories that seemed to be going on amongst the dancers were hard to follow. But who cares, our eyes were firmly on Kylie anyway.

She moved through the genres as she paid homage to her 30 year career, from disco to cheese to country to sexy R&B to pure unadulterated pop. Kylie nipped off for incredible costume changes throughout – she was a cowgirl, a 70s icon, and disco glam ready for a night at Studio 54.
The entire show had a strong 60s/70s era vibe, paying tribute to the singer herself, who was born in 1968, and the nostalgia ran throughout – naturally performed her hits like Slow, Wow, Spinning Around, Cant Get You Out Of My Head, even Locomotion.
Especially For You was a special moment. While wed hoped Jason might appear on stage, it quickly became clear that the audience were to take on his part and the whole O2 sang the two parter with Kylie.
Quite frankly, she was breath-taking, and I say that as someone whos not as die-hard a fan as those around me who knew every single word and came clad in their Kylie t-shirts and face glitter.
Ive had the best year! she told the crowd at one point and it shone through on her face, her smile never once faltering.
I heard someone say she did amazingly for 50, but that has nothing to do with it. Partly because Kylie is absolutely ageless. Partly because this woman is the epitome of what hard work and giving the fans what they want can get you.
