This weeks episode of Little Gold Men features interviews with two Hollywood veterans from two very different corners of the industry. First up is Judd Apatow, the writer, director, producer, and occasional stand-up comedian who has been credited for single-handedly creating a mid-00s comedy boom with films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, and has since given massive career boosts to new talents like Lena Dunham, Pete Holmes, and Kumail Nanjiani. Hes also, most recently, the director of the HBO documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, all about the comedian who gave Apatow his own early career boost—hiring him as a joke writer and eventually a producer on The Larry Sanders Show. Speaking to Rebecca Keegan, Apatow discusses the impact Shandling had on his life along with an array of other subjects, from how political he gets in his tweets to the sympathy he has for another of his old mentors, Roseanne Barr.
Also on this weeks episode, Joanna Robinson speaks to Hayley Atwell, who broke out for global audiences as the fearless Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger and recently starred in the Starz miniseries adaptation of Howards End. She discusses why she wondered how modern audiences might respond to the ending of the story, originally published as a novel by E.M. Forster in 1910, as well as the wide range of stories about women available on television now, plus some details about her role in the upcoming Bruce Springsteen-inspired coming-of-age film, Blinded by the Light.
The episode also includes a conversation between Robinson, Richard Lawson, and Katey Rich about one of the smallest but most interesting Emmy categories: guest actor and actress.
