Manchester United have joined local rivals Man City in the battle for Benfica star Florentino Luis, who is becoming one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.

The 20-year-old attracted the attention of City over the summer, but signed Rodri in the holding midfield role instead of launching a bid for Luis.

Paris Saint-Germain did in fact make an offer for the Benfica man but it was turned down as the Portuguese champions are keen to keep hold of one of their brightest young talents.

Man Utd have now joined the fray as Portuguese outlet A Bola report that the Red Devils sent scouts to watch Benficas comprehensive 4-0 win at Sporting Braga on 1 September, where they were also keeping an eye on centre-back Ruben Dias.

Luis started that game, as he has all four of Benficas Primeira Liga matches so far this season, of which they have won three and lost one.

The Portugal youth international signed a new contract this summer which extends his stay at Benfica till 2024, but crucially increased his release clause from €60m (£54m) to €120m (£108m).

Luis told Benfica TV at the time: I look at my progress in training with great pride because it has been very good. I was fortunate to have great conditions, coaches and colleagues who helped me evolve with each training session and every game to get where I am now.

We have goals, but we always try to do things step by step, to live in the present, because if we do not, we can hardly achieve what we want.
