Netflix Actually Cancels A Marvel Show

In a truly wild turn of events, Netflix has canceled Iron Fist—the first of the streaming giants multiple Marvel properties to get the ax. The first season of the show, starring Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick, got abysmal reviews from critics—it had a blistering 37 rating on Metacritic—and even prompted Complex to title its review, "Iron Fist' Is Too Rich And White For Me to Give A Sh/*/t”. The response was so bad that The Defenders, a follow-up Netflix Marvel series, poked fun at the characters reputation by fully roasting him in the shows official trailer.

The show focused on Danny Rand, an orphaned kid rescued by warrior monks and trained to fight. As an adult, he remerges to reconnect with his past and take his place at his family company. In a co-statement Netflix and Marvel announced Iron Fists cancellation saying: “Marvels Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. Were thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership weve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”

Netflix earned a reputation in its early years of content-creation for renewing basically every original series, but it has since begun to swing the ax more freely—though its decisions about what to cancel and what to renew can still occasionally seem head-scratching. Most of the other Netflix Marvel properties are all greenlit for new seasons at this time—Jessica Jones, Daredevil, The Punisher. The Mike Colter starring Luke Cage, which recently debuted its second season, is expected to get renewed as well.

Iron Fist could still be resurrected in some other way. Disneys own streaming platform, which is scheduled to emerge in 2019, will be stocked with Marvel faves; Loki and Scarlet Witch are both expected to have their own shows. That means the return of Danny Rand could also be on the docket—good news for any Iron Fist fans, whoever they may be.
