Storm Team 4 says a powerful nor'easter is expected to besiege the tri-state area for up to 24 hours, lashing the region with wind gusts up to 50 mph and up to 2 inches of rain by the time the system moves out.

Friday, meteorologists say, will be the calm before the storm. Highs will settle in the 50s for much of the day with lingering clouds and not much sunshine.

The storm is expected to move in Friday night and linger through Saturday night, threatening minor-to-moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas, power outages and beach erosion. Strong wind gusts may also cause some damage.

Storm Team 4 says conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly as the evening goes on Friday and will continue to intensify heading into the weekend. Saturday is expected to be an overall nasty day, with heavy rain and strong winds potentially downing trees and causing power outages across the region.

Con Edison was scheduling extra crews to respond to any power outages and was reminding customers to stay away from downed power lines.

Most of the region could see between 1 and 2 inches of rain on Saturday. There is also a chance for some light snow in the Catskills and waves could reach up to a foot in some areas.
