Friends, what can I say? It’s been a blessed year already. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married this May. Natalie Portman delivered a hell of a zinger at the Golden Globes. And most importantly, when Fifty Shades Freed comes out next month, viewers will get the chance to hear Jamie Dornan cover a Paul McCartney song. Seriously.
Take a gander at the upcoming film’s track list, and you’ll see Mr. Grey himself. Yes, it’s (sadly) a bonus track—but Fifty Shades fans are accustomed to using their imaginations when contemplating this franchise, aren’t they? Grab the film’s soundtrack, and you will be rewarded with Christian Grey singing a cover of “Maybe I’m Amazed”—not to be confused with Lonestar’s “Amazed,” although that should definitely be an additional bonus track.
Truthfully, we should have seen this coming long ago. Fifty Shades was inspired by the Twilight series, after all—and just as Dornan is following in Robert Pattinson’s footsteps as a Brit playing an overbearing American heartthrob, so, too, will he mimic Pattinson’s legacy of singing on his film’s soundtrack. (Remember Pattinson country croonin’ on “Let Me Sign” and “Never Think”? Now you do.)
Although the song choice might be unexpected—we would have placed our bets on something sexy-adjacent but safe, like a Maroon 5 number—it’s also not a total surprise. Director James Foleytold us that vocals from Dornan were coming in an interview last year, saying, “He is an incredibly good singer—he sang a lot on set. He sings in [Movie] 3, but it’s a surprise.”
That lovely little anecdote begets a few amusing mental images. Imagine, for a moment, Jamie Dornan meandering around the Fifty Shades set, casually arranging sex toys while casting surreptitious glances and singing “She Will Be Loved” just loud enough for everyone to hear—but not so loud as to be intrusive. “I was in a music duo once,” he might have murmured to the first person who asked, a twinkle of nostalgia in his eye. “It was all right.”
Fifty Shades Freed comes out February 9.
