Oscars 2018: What You Didn’t See on TV

Celebrities

By the end of awards season, we’ve heard seemingly endless stories about how Gary Oldman transformed himself into Winston Churchill, how Greta Gerwig drew on her own high-school experience to create Lady Bird, and possibly everything Timothée Chalamet has ever done in his life. But how about the story of the grand entrance Jennifer Lawrence accidentally made into a bar full of people who were clapping for Jordan Peele? Or how Judd Apatow helped Jimmy Kimmel with his Oscars opening monologue?

On this week’s episode of Little Gold Men,Vanity Fair’s Hollywood correspondent Nicole Sperling joins to share what happened at the Oscars that you didn’t see on TV. Nicole had a ticket to the awards, but like many other attendees, she spent a good portion of the night lingering at the bar—where Laurie Metcalf hung out after losing the supporting-actress statuette to Allison Janney, and where everyone was extremely confused when, as part of Kimmel’s skit, Gal Gadot and Guillermo del Toro came rushing into the lobby together. Nicole and Mike Hogan also share some of their favorite stories from the Vanity Fair Oscar party, including a long conversation between Peele and Martin McDonagh, and Katey Rich and Richard Lawson wrap up the season as a whole, including predictions about which of this year’s Oscar losers will be the first to win a statuette. (Here’s looking at you, Saoirse.)

Listen to this week’s episode above, and don’t go anywhere! At Little Gold Men, there’s no such thing as an off-season. We’ll be back next week, and every week after, with more discussions of what’s happening in Hollywood, which movies are worth your time, and plenty of deep dives into the Emmy race—where the statuettes may not be gold men, but the awards-campaign process is just as fascinating.
