Pink has been tapped to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl LII, the N.F.L. has confirmed. The singer will perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the upcoming event, kicking off the game that will later feature a Halftime Show headlined by Justin Timberlake. She’ll join artists like Luke Bryan,Alicia Keys, and Idina Menzel, all of whom have taken part in this Super Bowl tradition in recent years.
Pink is a natural fit for the gig, coming off one of her busiest years in recent memory. The singer released her latest album, Beautiful Trauma, just last October, and made headlines when she accepted the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMAs and shared an empowering speech she once gave to her then-6-year-old daughter, Willow Hart. “You, my darling girl, are beautiful,” she said as Willow watched from the audience, wearing a tiny and adorable matching suit. “And I love you.”
The Super Bowl will also take place just days after this year’s Grammys, where Pink is scheduled to perform, joining a slate of artists that also includes Lady Gaga, and Childish Gambino. She’ll be singing her Beautiful Trauma single “What About Us,” which will probably include some element of trapeze performance—her trademark move these days. It wouldn’t be the first time she did that at the Grammys. Unfortunately, the Super Bowl stage is a bit more limiting, so Pink will have to deliver those powerhouse vocals with both feet planted firmly on the ground. Super Bowl LII kicks off on February 4.
