Serena Williams was gracious in defeat as she praised Bianca Andreescu in her runners-up interview after her US Open final defeat, saying she would want the Canadian teenager to win the title most out of anyone outside of her own family.

Andreescu was far the better player on the day – with Williams struggling behind her serve – but she staved off a late fightback from the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who started thriving under intense support from a deafening Arthur Ashe crowd.

However, a final break at the death saw Andreescu get over the line. Williams embraced Andreescu warmly after the final point was over and was highly complimentary of her opponent following her 6-3 7-5 win in her post-match speech.

Thank you guys so much, it means a lot to me, she said after receiving a rapturous applause. You guys have been so amazing for the two weeks I was here so thank you so much.

Yeah, I was just fighting and at that point trying to stay out there a little bit longer. Honestly the fans just started chanting so hard, it just made me you know… I was grateful for that.
