John Boyega has revealed that Star Wars: Episode IX is being released on 19 December 2019.

The British actor made the announcement via a countdown on his Instagram, that simply read: 532 days, 11 hours, 56 minutes, 58 seconds until IX.

So far, we know little about what to expect from the movie (no spoilers, movie buffs), but there are certainly some surprises in store.

The recent release of Solo: A Star Wars Story became the franchises first damp squib at the box office, taking $84.4 million (£63m) on opening weekend and $192.8 million (£146m) over a month.

While that sounds impressive, it was noticeably less than Rogue Ones opening of $155 million (£117) and $424 million domestic (£322m) by its fourth week.

After Kelly Marie Tran deleted her social media following being attacked online, John in particular had a message for rude fans of the franchise.

The actor – who played Stormtrooper Finn – tweeted: If you dont like Star Wars or the characters understand that there are decisions makers and harassing the actors/ actresses will do nothing. Youre not entitled to politeness when your approach is rude. Even if you paid for a ticket!

To the majority of Star Wars fans thank you for supporting and putting yourselves in our shoes. You understand that there is a process so much appreciated ! (sic)
