On December 20, Star Wars: Episode IX will bring another galactic trilogy to an end, capping the latest chapter in Disneys billion-dollar franchise. For the last few years, Disney has also fortified the franchise with prequels like Rogue One and Solo, hoping to squeeze a little more juice from the series. But after a relatively mild response from fans and critics, Disney put prequels on hold. Now, the question is whether or not Disney will immediately get to work on going after Episode IX. According to Bob Iger—the answer is . . . no. Not yet, anyway.
“We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter,” Iger said in an interview with Bloomberg late Thursday. “There are movies in development, but we have not announced them. But I think that were gonna hit pause and take some time and reset because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Stars Wars movies, but again . . . there will be a bit of a hiatus.”
This, of course, means those who want their fill of new Star Wars material will have to turn to the studios upcoming streaming service, Disney+. The streamer will host two live-action Star Wars shows. The first is The Mandelorian, which will be written and produced by creator Jon Favreau and star Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal. The second is a Rogue One prequel spinoff series, which will see Diego Luna jump back into his role as the rebellious Cassian Andor.
In the interview, Iger said hes thrilled Lucasfilm is going for live-action shows, which promises will be “at a quality level of the movies. So Im not concerned at all.”
In the meantime, fans hoping to get a look at whatever David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will do once they get started on their series of Star Wars films will just have to wait.
