Stranger Things Season 3: New Monsters, Romance, and More of What to Expect

Intense monsters, menacing rats, puberty, and awkward new romances are the latest troubles the teens of Hawkins, Indiana will face in Stranger Things 3, the third installment of Netflixs 80s throwback sci-fi hit. The new season begins in 1985, after school is out for the summer—and our young heroes are spending all their time at the towns brand new mall.

“Season three is the saddest season so far. You will be crying by the end of it like I did,” said Millie Bobby Brown, who plays telekinetic Eleven, at the shows world premiere in Santa Monica, California, on Friday. “It definitely gets very deep and emotional. Its even scarier than the other seasons.”

For the extravagant screening, Netflix transformed the premieres venue, Santa Monica High School, into the fictional Hawkins High from the series—complete with a marching band, cheerleaders and hundreds of screaming fans waiting to get a glimpse of the cast and filmmakers. Following the screening, guests traveled to the Santa Monica Pier, which was converted into a retro Stranger Things fair. Guests were treated to unlimited rides on carnival attractions such as the rechristened Hawkins Ferris Wheel, and enjoyed free games and snacks.

Vanity Fair caught up with the stars at the premiere, where we learned five new important details about the new eight-episodes season—all dropping on July 4.

Living in a material world

“Eleven has grown, and is finding out more about who she is as a human being,” said Brown, 15. “Shes trying to be more confident, and she starts learning whats it like to be a normal girl. Max [played by Sadie Sink] helps her a lot with that, especially with boys and fashion. Eleven goes shopping for the first time with Max. It was one of my favorite scenes to film. We see more of the girls having fun. Its so important to embody that girl power and friendship.”

Romance is blossoming, but complicates the groups friendship

Eleven and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) are now officially dating. The two cant stop making out—but they experience some challenges while navigating their new relationship. “Fans will finally get to see Mike and Eleven as boyfriend and girlfriend,” said Brown. “But, when they watch the show, one thing they may learn about Mike and Elevens relationship is that being together might not be easy.”

As for the gangs other main couple, Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Max, the two are still dating as well.
