In honor of Mothers Day, Saturday Night Live opted for a cold open dedicated to mom, and hoped to avoid politics with little success. Some of the cast had their mothers with them for the occasion, and they all seemed to have their own suggestions about how to improve the show.
Featured player Luke Nell told his mom that he loved her because she always gives him the “best advice.” His mother then offered some more wisdom: “Enough with the Trump jokes.” After Nell explained that he wasnt in charge of writing those, she added, “And why doesnt S.N.L. ever talk about crooked Hillary?”
“Mom, Im so new here,” Nell interjected. “Please do not do this to me.”
Next was Chris Redd, who warned his mom, “Yeah, mom, Im new and black, so be cool.”
“I dont understand why everyone focuses on Trump at all when you should be focused on Jesus,” she replied.
“Well Jesus isnt president, mom.”
“And thats the problem.”
Not all of the moms wanted to discuss politics, though. Aidy Bryants mom opened the show telling her she was ready to “rip it up at the after-party” while Kenan Thompsons mom told him “I cant imagine the show without you. Like, I actually cant remember when you werent on it.”
Pete Davidson closed the cold open with his mom, who told him that, while shes proud of him, she doesnt like it when he does “all the penis jokes.”
“Well, not tonight, mom,” he said. “Because Mothers Day is all about vaginas.”
