When actors make the rounds promoting their films, interviewers are always on the lookout for some fun talent or gimmick they can draw out in order to spice up the conversation. For some, its impressions; for others, its dance. And for Kingsman star Taron Egerton, its song. While speaking in support of his new film, Robin Hood (which is not a musical), on SiriusXMs Shade 45 this week, Egerton was nonetheless persuaded to give a preview of the singing ability he will be showing off in next years Elton John biopic, Rocketman. At the 9:50 mark in the video above, Egerton obliges the request and clears his throat before crooning out a snippet of the Elton John career-launcher “Your Song,” which even non-Elton John fans will remember from a pivotal moment in Moulin Rouge.
These golden pipes give Egerton a significant edge in the musical-biopic department. Oftentimes, when an actor plays a crooner, they either muddle through the best they can with their own vocals (as was the case of Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line) or, more often, lip sync over the singers original tracks. But with Egerton, there will be no faking—which makes the teaser trailer released earlier this year all the more fun to watch.
For die-hard Egerton fans, of course, his thrilling voice is old news. The Internets cup runneth over with clips of the actor singing his heart out on chat shows, in radio interviews, and, most incredibly, in the wild.
Things reached a fever pitch during the Eddie the Eagle press junket, when Egerton was paired in interviews with his fellow song-and-dance man Hugh Jackman, and the duo appeared with the equally vocally gifted Luke Evans on The Jonathan Ross Show.
A massive amount of people have also heard Egerton flaunt his Elton John skills already, in the hit animated film Sing—where the actor voiced a golden-piped gorilla named Johnny, who sang multiple songs including Johns own “Im Still Standing.”
Though its tempting to wonder if that bravura performance alone is what inspired Rocketman, the biopic has actually been in the works for years, with first Justin Timberlake and then Tom Hardy circling the lead role. But while one of those names might have needed a little bit of work in the acting department and the other some help in the singing department, Egerton looks like the full package.
