Acclaimed noughties crime drama The Sopranos will return to screens with a new prequel movie.
Creatorr David Chase confirmed that he has penned the movie, with a working title of The Many Saints Of Newark alongside former Sopranos writer Lawrence Kenner.
The script has been purchased by Warner Bros-owned production company New Line.
Set in the era of the Newark riots in the 1960s, the movie will reportedly feature a number of The Sopranos’ characters including Tony Soprano’s father, Giovanni ‘Johnny Boy’, and a younger version of his wife Livia and Tony’s uncle Junior.
Chase will serve as producer and co-writer on the movie.
The Sopranos was one of the most acclaimed drama of the early 21st century, running on HBO between 1999 and 2007.
It followed the life of Italian-American mobster Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini; Gandolfini sadly passed away in 2013.
Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich told Deadline: ‘David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film.’
