This role was always going to be menacing, however Tom Hardy looks absolutely terrifying as Al Capone in the first official look from his latest flick Fonzo.

While weve seen snapshots of Venom, his turn into the world of comics, but this really is something.

Is it because Al Capone was real?

No offense to those who feel, deep in their souls, that Venom is real, of course…

Fonzo director Josh Trank shared the image of Tom in costume and prosthetics as the mobster overnight, in what appeared to be the first still released from the film.

And while weve been treated to a shot or two of Tom on the set of the film – which wrapped in May – it doesnt quite match the feeling you get when glancing upon him in full character, does it?

Wearing a striped top, blue, satin robe with a cigar hanging out of his mouth, the 40-year-old actor embodies the character perfectly as hes surrounded by a bevy of women.

Hes sporting a receding hairline and scars along his cheek – this guy is hardcore. His nickname Scarface also seems to be put to good use.

Fonzo is a biopic based on Capone, who was a feared gangster who ran Chicago in the 1920s.

It has been suggested the 1929 St. Valentines Day Massacre – which saw the brutal killing of seven members of an opposing mob by machine guns – was linked Capones men and the Chicago Mafia.

While that would make for some riveting film, this particular glimpse into the life of the man will show us the fella in his later years, following on from spending almost a decade in prison, during which he also battled dementia.

Tom had previously shared shots of himself as Capone, still with telltale cigar, to Instagram but this one is a real doozy.

However, if youre hoping for a trailer any time soon, Josh confirmed on his Twitter weve still got a wait.

More: Tom Hardy

He wrote on 2 August: Enjoy the trailer in two months. weirdos.

With that attitude, we cant wait.
