Watch Ruth Bader Ginsburg Predict the Future in Gripping Doc RBG

Celebrities

Before she was a 25-year-veteran of the Supreme Court famous for her blistering dissents and commitment to judicial fashion, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a law professor, an advocate for womens rights, and a woman utterly fearless in the face of a Senate confirmation hearing. In this exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary RBG, Ginsburg speaks before the panel of Senators—all male, save for Senator Dianne Feinstein—and speaks forcefully about her hopes for the future of the court, including a time when there will be “three, four, perhaps even more women on the high-court bench—women not shaped from the same mold, but of different complexions.” At the time, she was speaking to a panel that was also all white, something directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West slyly emphasize. And while Ginsburg would have to wait nearly 20 years to be joined by more women in the high court, with Justices Sonia Sotomayor and __ Elena Kagan__ now sitting alongside her, her prediction has come true.

RBG is a chronicle of Ginsburgs life in the law and in shaping American life, but it is also remarkably personal, featuring conversations between her and her granddaughter (a recent Harvard Law School alum) and candid snapshots from her life with husband Martin Ginsburg, who died in 2010. Martin, known for being gregarious and silly where Ginsburg was reserved, also shows up briefly in this clip: grinning from ear to ear when his wife thanks him for his years of support.

The Ginsburgs relationship will get even more focus in the upcoming biopic On the Basis of Sex, starring Felicity Jones as Ruth and Armie Hammer as Martin. But in the meantime, catch RBG, from Magnolia Pictures, in theaters on May 4.
