Woody Allen Says Hell “Never Stop Writing,” Despite Industry Backlash

Celebrities

Stars dont rush to Woody Allen movies the way they used to. Over the last several months, the writer-director has seen his cachet dwindle in the wake of repeated claims by Dylan Farrow, his estranged adopted daughter, that Allen sexually assaulted her as a child. (Allen has repeatedly denied the allegations.) As the #MeToo movement has risen in Hollywood, Allens reputation has taken a hit; stars like Greta Gerwig and Michael Caine have both vowed never to work with him again. But in a quick statement to Page Six, Allen recently said that the growing tide wont dissuade him from carrying on business as usual.

“Im a writer,” he said. “Its what I am. What I do. What I always will be. Ill write. Since I continually have ideas, itll be new ideas and Ill write new things.”

Whether hell find an outlet for those new ideas is a different story. Allen is currently in the midst of a multi-picture Amazon deal, but questions have arisen about whether or not the streamer is going to keep working with him. The writer-directors latest film, A Rainy Day in New York, was set to be released this year, but has been shelved indefinitely—likely thanks to the growing industry sentiment against Allen, as well as the fact that three of the films cast members, including star Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Hall, and Griffin Newman, donated their salaries from it to charities like the Times Up and RAINN.

The Amazon deal itself has also come under scrutiny in the last year, as it was orchestrated by exec Roy Price, who famously made a habit of passing on female-led projects like The Handmaids Tale and Big Little Lies (both of which became massive hits at other networks), and canceled the female-led series Good Girls Revolt after just one well-received season. He stepped down from his post at Amazon last year after being accused of sexual harassment. (Price did not comment on the allegations.)

Allens latest comment seems designed to downplay reports that he is taking a break from films. But with Amazon apparently cooling on their partnership and actors carefully sidestepping future offers, its unclear where hell go next.
