American Horror Story Is Finally Heading Into the Future

American Horror Story has taken us to some of the creepiest locations on the planet: a haunted house, an asylum, a circus full of freaks, a town run by witches. But it has yet to take us to the scariest place we can imagine: our own future. And that’s exactly where Ryan Murphy says the show is going to go next.

Murphy announced the good news about Season 8 at this winter’s Television Critics Association semi-annual press tour in Pasadena on Friday, per Entertainment Weekly. “All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future—still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done,” he said.

Does that mean space?

“Not space,” Murphy clarified.

Murphy has shot down a space A.H.S. before, telling EWback in 2014 that “space is not in America.” “It’s American Horror Story, not Intergalactic Horror Story,” he explained. “It is land-bound and it takes place in the United States.”

That leaves all kinds of possibilities open. Will it be a near-future like Black Mirror, with technology that’s recognizable but far more sinister than our own? Or will it be a dystopia, a post-Apocalyptic landscape, or so far into the future that humans will have evolved beyond all recognition?

“I pitched it to [FX chief] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is,” Murphy said. “I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it, it’s different from what we’ve done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I’ve done on that show.”
