Spider-Man wont have it all his own way for much longer as anti-heroine Black Cat is set to get her own standalone movie.

Although reports suggested Sony were focusing on Silver & Black – a team-up movie planned to introduce Black Cat and Silver Sable – Variety now reports that project has been ditched in favour of a simpler Black Cat solo mission.

Comic book fans will know the ferocious feline as the former-supervillain turned partner to Spidey (as well as love interest).

She first made an appearance in 1979s The Amazing Spider-Man comic, but will now take the lead in one of Sonys standalone movies as they attempt to build a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe to rival the MCU.

Were focused on being faithful to the comics, said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures and the executive tasked with helming Sonys new Marvel series.

We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.

Panitch went on to to stress the studios commitment to bringing more diverse superhero stories to the screen, claiming Black Cat wasnt the only new character theyve been working on.

Spider-Man connects to a lot of the characters, said Panitch. There are villains, heroes, and antiheroes, and a lot are female characters, many of whom are bona fide, fully dimensionalized, and utterly unique.

He added: We feel theres no reason the Marvel characters shouldnt be able to embrace diversity.

Theres no word yet when the movie might go into production, but as its the latest in a long list of mooted spin-offs – including Jackpot, SIlk and Nightwatch – it may not be for some time.

Venom, the first of these, hits cinemas on 5 October 2018.
