Coronation Street actress Samia Longchambon has enthused that she has been overwhelmed by an amazing reaction to her being open about her struggle with anxiety. The star, best known for playing hairdresser Maria Connor, recently spoke out about dealing with the mental health condition on a day to day basis.

At the time she said of panic attacks that they make her feel like she is going to die and she wouldnt wish them on anyone. She wrote in a social media post: Ive suffered with anxiety since I was 11 (and possibly before that, but that was the first time I saw my doctor about my inability to “get a deep breath”).

It is something that comes and goes with me, but when its there its awful and all consuming. I love that the stigma of mental health is finally being broken and people are opening up, talking and realising that youre not alone. In fact it is pretty common. Im not gonna patronise but just wanted to send love out to all people having a daily struggle… #thistooshallpass #gethelp #talk#breathe.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Samia has now explained how she has felt humbled by the responses to putting it out there and she is glad that she did it. She told us: Its been amazing. I didnt have one negative reaction, I was really nervous about speaking about it because you dont know what people will think of you, or what kind of reaction youll get. But everyone was so supportive, and a lot of people have been messaging me on the social media platforms. Its been really humbling and actually it feels quite liberating to go, “Yeah, you know lifes not perfect all the time”.

My close friends all know me, and know that Im a worrier, so its not a shock to anyone who knows me that I suffer with anxiety. Its not something I talk about every day, I dont want to be defined by it or anything, but its just something that a lot of people have and something that you live with.

Ive always had it since I was kid. Meditation can help I think, I just do guided ones on YouTube sometimes if Im feeling a bit anxious or stressed. And talking as well, I think a lot of people are talking more now, which is important. But something like a reflexology course I am doing has been helping me as well, having something else to focus on rather than over-thinking – I always do that. Its given me something else to be busy with instead of that.
