Drakes Big Hollywood Year Is Taking Shape

Celebrities

Before Drake became Drake, he was Aubrey Graham, a young Canadian actor making his bones on Degrassi: The Next Generation. Then he went and, you know, became hip-hops pre-eminent hit generator, eschewing his acting days for good. Well, semi-good. Hes popped up in projects here and there, like Anchorman 2 and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Then, in 2017, he started laying the groundwork for a prestige run as a Hollywood producer—and two years later, the fruits of his labor are starting to pay off.

On Monday, Drake debuted the teaser for Top Boy, his revival of a popular, short-lived British crime series that first aired in 2011, at a concert in London. The BAFTA-winning show, which lasted for two seasons, follows the drama swirling around two drug dealers in London. Drake, who found the programs two seasons on YouTube, became hooked on the show and its sterling cast.

“That human element drew me in,” he said in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I started just looking [the actors] up. Like, who are these people? Are these actors I should know? Are they just famous over there? I remember I hit Future [Adel “Future” Nur, Drakes manager and business partner], and I was just like, This show is incredible.” He later bought the rights to the property and got the revival going at Netflix.

The streamer dropped the official teaser for the series on Tuesday. The show does not yet have a set release date, but will debut in “autumn,” which is a Drake touch if there ever was one.

The Top Boy peek arrives shortly after the first look at Euphoria, another drama that Drake is executive producing, this time for HBO. The trippy series, which stars Zendaya, follows a group of high-schoolers navigating typical teen trappings, like sex, drugs, friendship, and social media. The brief snippet doesnt give much away, but, like Top Boy, it does promise something dark and moody. It is set to premiere later this year.

Drake reportedly has other projects in the works as well, but Euphoria and Top Boy are two pretty auspicious entries for now. Guess he couldnt stay away from the business that got his career off the ground. Its like priests always say: remember you are television, and to television you shall return.
