Game of Thrones returns for season 8 sometime next year.

HBOs epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones will see its end next year. The show has consistently pushed the bar in terms of visuals and scale of the story. It has also blurred the distinction between television and film production to some extent, with one episode costing as much as a full-fledged movie. But the final season of the show will go even beyond, with only six episodes, but each of feature length.

One of the creators and showrunners David Benioff told Entertainment Weekly, “Having the largest battle doesnt sound very exciting — it actually sounds pretty boring. Part of our challenge, and really, Miguels challenge, is how to keep that compelling… weve been building toward this since the very beginning, its the living against the dead, and you cant do that in a 12-minute sequence.”

The final season of the show will be dominated by the battle between the living and the Night King and his army of White Walkers and freakishly fast zombies. The Wall, the structure that protected the realm for millennia, was broken down and Night Kings onslaught had already begun by the time the last season finished. The publication reports that one of the biggest battles — if not the biggest — will probably take place in Winterfell, the ancestral seat of the House of Stark. The set was vastly expanded to accommodate the combatants.

Peter Dinklage says, “Its brutal. It makes the Battle of the Bastards look like a theme park.” For the uninitiated, Battle of the Bastards was the conflict between the armies of Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton.

Season 8 promises not only to be epic, but also emotional and is already being described as bittersweet. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) says, “Everything feels more intense. I had a scene with someone and I turned to him and said, Oh my God, Im not going to do this ever again, and that brings tears to my eyes.”

Game of Thrones arrives for its eight and final season sometime next year.
