K-pop star Amber announces departure from SM Entertainment as contract with company ends

K-pop singer Amber Liu has announced her departure from SM Entertainment.

The 26-year-old announced the news on Twitter on 1 September, revealing that she had decided to part ways with the company after her contract with them ended, while thanking everyone who believed in me.

She posted a handwritten note (written in both English and Korean), that read: Hey everyone. I would like to announce my contract with SM Entertainment has ended today and I have decided to part ways with the company.

From the bottom of my heart, Id like to thank everyone who believed in me and has been patient with me all these years.

She added: I cant wait to show you whats in store in this next chapter of my career. Again, always, THANK YOU!! as she signed off the post as Llama – her nickname.

In response, fans have been supporting their idol with her decision in a series of tweets.

Amber first shot to fame as a member of Korean girl group f(x), who released four studio albums and were originally active between 2009-2016.

In August, the group reunited and performed at the SM Town series of concerts in Tokyo, without original members Sulli and Victoria. However, with Ambers departure from SM, fans will only wonder if the group will continue their comeback.

Amber also embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut EP, Beautiful, in 2015, as well as further solo singles.
