Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jimmy Fallon Give 2018s Biggest Songs a Holiday Twist

Celebrities

If youre going to welcome Lin-Manuel Miranda to your late-night show, youre basically obligated to let him sing—right? On Monday night, Jimmy Fallon did just that. The Mary Poppins Returns star was booked for an interview on The Tonight Show, but ahead of the sit-down, Fallon began talking about getting into the festive spirit—prompting Miranda to show up on stage ahead of his appointed time. As the Hamilton maestro told Fallon, “I appear any time someone says, I wanna sing.” From there, the two came up with a fun game: transforming all of this years pop songs to be about the holidays.

Some samples: the two remixed Camila Cabellos endlessly catchy “Havana” to, instead, be about a drunken “mall Santa.” Sample lyrics:

“His breath is reeking like Jack Daniels, ho, ho, ho / Holding a beer and a Mylanta, ho, ho, ho/ Oh, theres a line to see Mall Santa / Hes passed out in Panera / Mall Santa, oh, hell no.”

Other songs included Maroon 5s “Girls Like You,” Shawn Mendess “In My Blood,” Post Malones “Better Now,” and Cardi Bs “I Like It.”

Oh, and then there was Zedd, Maren Morris, and Greys “The Middle.” Miranda and Fallon re-wrote the songs chorus—“Baby, why dont you just meet me in the middle?”—to something a little more festive: “Baby, why dont you just help me spin my dreidel?”
