Roger Federer tumbled out of the US Open in shock fashion on Tuesday night as Grigor Dimitrov sprang a surprise on Arthur Ashe.
Under the New York lights, the world No. 3 – who was horribly out of sorts in a 6-3 4-6 6-3 4-6 2-6 defeat – twice let a one-set lead slip and left the court to receive treatment on an injury heading into the deciding set.
It proved to be terminal as the 20-time Grand Slam champion struggled badly in the fifth set, falling 4-0 down in quick fashion on his way out of the tournament.
Its the first time Dimitrov has beaten the 20-time Grand Slam champion, who had lost their first seven meetings and the timing is all the remarkable with the 28-year-old horribly out of form.
Having risen to world No. 3 after winning the ATP Finals at the end of 2017, Dimitrovs ranking has slipped to world No. 78, although he will climb back into the top-25 after this win.

With Daniil Medvedev – his semi-final opponent – struggling physically, Dimitrov – nicknamed “Baby Fed” in his youth – will fancy his chances of reaching a first Grand Slam final.
